Stopped at a forge in Hermann, MO and the guy had his anvil on a tree stump bolted down with 4 lag bolts
I was driving back from a job and pulled over because I saw the coal smoke. He said the stump had been his granddad's and the bolts keep it from walking when he draws out bigger stock. My anvil's just sitting loose on a pallet right now, so am I missing out or is bolting it down overkill for a small shop?
The bolts keep it from walking, huh? That's the most polite way I've ever heard someone say their anvil likes to wander off mid-job. Mine's on a pallet too and it hasn't moved an inch in two years, but I also only bang out little stuff like hooks and bottle openers. If you're drawing out thick stock on the regular, a loose anvil wastes a ton of your hammer energy bouncing instead of moving metal, so the bolts might not be as crazy as they sound.
