Quenching in old motor oil gave me softer steel, not harder

Tried the classic bucket of used 10W-30 from my F-150 to harden a chisel last weekend, and it came out with a spongy edge that dulled on pine. I thought the impurities would help, but I'm back to brine and getting the real bite. Anyone else had worse luck with oil quenches on simple carbon steel?
