Hot take: power hammers are overrated for small work and I'll die on this hill
I watched a guy at the Rockford IL hammer-in last month spend 20 minutes fiddling with his 50 lb power hammer to draw out a 6 inch piece of 3/8 round bar that I finished by hand in 4 minutes, so I gotta ask, is anyone else here actually faster on simple taper work with just a hammer and anvil?
Six-inch piece of 3/8 round is taper work you can knock out in four heats by hand, and no power hammer on earth beats that setup time. Most guys run their blow too light or too fast on small stock and end up chasing the work around the dies instead of drawing it. Save the hammer for anything over an inch and keep the small stuff on the anvil.
