Am I the only one who finally got a decent forge weld after 3 years of fighting it?
Been at this hobby for almost 4 years now and my forge welds were always hit or miss, more miss really. Two Saturdays ago I was working on a simple billet in my garage shop here in Boise and it just... stuck on the first try. The steel was mild and a scrap of 1080, nothing special, heat was around 2300 degrees by color, and I brushed and fluxed like normal. Difference was I slowed down and let the whole piece soak to temp instead of rushing the edges into the fire. Made 4 more welds that afternoon with zero failures and I sat there kind of stunned. Was it the soak, the flux timing, or just luck? Anyone got a way they test a weld before drawing it out?
