PSA: Manual budgeting beats every app I ever tried

I spent six months using Mint and YNAB to track my spending, and I was still overspending on takeout every month. Switched to a simple paper ledger and a calculator, and I finally saw where my money was actually going. Has anyone else found that the old-school way works better than all these fancy tools?

Grabbed a spiral notebook and a pencil after years of the same problem. Turns out typing numbers into an app just made me feel productive without actually changing my habits. Writing it down by hand forces you to look at every single purchase no shortcuts. The act of writing a $50 takeout dinner makes it hurt more than tapping a screen ever did. Been doing it two years now and I actually underspend most months.

Is it weird how we've gotten so used to things being easy that the friction is actually what helps us remember? Like if something takes no effort, our brain just files it away as background noise.

The act of writing a $50 takeout dinner makes it hurt more than tapping a screen ever did" this hit me hard, @knight.dylan. I tried the app route too and it just didn't stick, handwriting makes every dollar feel real.
