My old boss handed me a $200 bonus after 60 hour weeks for a year and I still cant decide if I was dumb to take it
Back in 2019 I worked at a warehouse in Bakersfield and my boss pulled me into his office in December with an envelope. I had put in 60 hour weeks for almost a year, covering for two guys who got fired in March, and he slides this envelope across the desk and says you really stepped up this year. I open it up later in my truck and its $200. Not a typo, two hundred bucks. Here is where I keep going back and forth on this. One side of me says I should have thrown it back in his face and walked out right there, because he saved thousands by not replacing those two guys and I ate all that work for free. The other side says I was 24 with a car payment and no degree and walking out would have just made me feel good for one afternoon before I was broke again. I took the money and acted grateful and I still do not know if that was smart or cowardly. What would you have done in that office, handed it back or kept your mouth shut and cashed it?
Wow, $200 for a whole year of 60 hour weeks? That works out to about 6 cents an hour extra, so I hope you framed that envelope because it's basically a museum piece now. Look, you were 24 with bills and no safety net, so taking the cash wasn't cowardly, it was survival, and handing it back would've just meant you were broke AND still job hunting. The real loser here is the guy who thought two hundred bucks could buy a whole year of your life, because he's gonna try that same move on the next kid who walks through that door.
