I thought grinding my own coffee was the move for 3 years, then a $9 bag beat my $22 beans
For three years I stood in my kitchen every morning hand grinding beans I ordered online, weighing everything on a scale, timing the pour. I honestly thought people who bought pre ground coffee were just lazy or didn't care. Then my grinder broke in November and I grabbed a $9 bag of already ground stuff from the grocery store on Normandy Blvd out of pure desperation. I made it in the same setup, same water, same ratio, and it tasted better than the $22 single origin beans I had been grinding every morning. I sat there kind of annoyed because I had spent probably $400 extra over three years chasing something a cheap bag already had. The tipping point was when my wife tried both cups blind and picked the cheap one without hesitating. So maybe the ritual was the point and the taste was never really about fresh grinding. It was about feeling like I was doing it right. Curious if anyone else has spent money on a hobby only to find the cheap version was fine the whole time, and what made you finally admit it.
The ritual thing is so real though. Half the stuff we do is just to feel like we're trying harder than everyone else, and the second someone proves the cheap way works just as good your whole brain short circuits. Same thing happened to me with protein powder honestly, the $15 tub tasted exactly like the $50 one and I was big mad about it.
