My friend called my watch list 'chronologically safe' and it stung
They said I only pick shows from the last five years, so I finally started 'The Wire' from 2002. Has anyone else had a rule about how old a show can be before you'll try it?

Oh man, I get that. I used to be the same way with anything that looked "old." My trick was to pick one classic show per year that friends always talked about. Started with "Buffy" from the 90s, then "Cheers." Once you get past the first few episodes, you stop noticing the older cameras and clothes. The Wire is a perfect place to start, it totally holds up.

Actually Buffy started in 97, but your point totally stands. The Wire is a great pick.

Honestly I was the same way about older shows until I tried The Wire. @ninaowens is right, you stop seeing the dated stuff after a couple episodes. The characters and stories just pull you in completely, it feels as real as anything made today.

Nah, the dated stuff totally takes me out of it. The tech and the clothes just scream a different time, and it makes the whole story feel less urgent. Some shows age better than others, but you can't just ignore the production gap.
