Unpopular opinion: I turned down the job in Chicago with the $12k raise and stayed at my boring firm in Toledo
My wife asked me one thing over dinner, what does your face look like on Sunday night, and I realized the money was never the part that was making me unhappy, so has anyone else picked the smaller paycheck and actually felt relief instead of regret?
That $12k is about $700 a month after taxes, which in Chicago gets eaten by parking alone. My buddy took a job in the Loop for a bump like that and his rent went up $900. So yeah the math on that raise probably didn't even work in your favor, which means you didn't really give anything up. The Sunday night face thing is real though, lot of guys ignore that until they're 55 and full of antacids. But here's the pushback, staying comfy in Toledo also means staying comfy, and boring firms have a way of getting rid of the people who stop growing. Relief today can turn into a pink slip in three years when the place gets bought out.
