Overheard a guy at the library say moving for a job is 'just swapping one cage for another'

I was sitting near a table at the downtown library last Tuesday and this older guy told his friend that moving for work is pointless because you just trade your old problems for new ones. It hit me hard because I have been offered a transfer to Austin for a $12,000 raise but I really hate the idea of leaving my friends and my favorite taco spot. I guess I never thought about how a big change might not fix the stuff that already bugs me at my current job. Does anyone here have experience moving for a bigger paycheck and regretting it or was it worth the hassle?

Your favorite taco spot" is exactly the kind of thing people don't account for when chasing a bigger number. Moving to Austin might get you a pay bump but it won't fix slow traffic or a bad boss, and those tacos will just be a memory. That $12k looks good on paper but it's real easy to miss what actually made you feel at home.

Oh come on, are we really acting like moving for a job is some deep life crisis? People relocate all the time and it works out fine. Yeah, you might miss the tacos from your old spot, but you can find new tacos. Is it really that serious to act like you're losing your soul over a $12k raise and a different city? Traffic is bad everywhere and bosses can be jerks no matter where you live. Seems like folks just want to romanticize their old life instead of admitting they're scared of change.
