Walked into a shop that had 17 bikes hanging from the ceiling

Went to a co-op downtown last Tuesday. Found this mechanic who built a pulley system for his whole ceiling. He lifts each bike up with a rope and a carabiner. Took me 5 minutes to realize he lost a spoke on one of the hanging frames and didn't care. Has anyone else seen a shop that maxes out vertical storage like that?

My old shop had this janky system with ropes and pulleys too, but the owner used old climbing rope that was all frayed. One day a bike fell off and landed right on a customer's car. He just shrugged and said "well, that knot must have slipped." I wonder how often that mechanic has to untangle all those bikes when he wants to get one down.

That pulley setup sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, especially with customer bikes under it. Did he at least mark the floor where each bike hangs, or is it pure guesswork every time he needs one down? Seems like the real test is watching him retrieve a specific bike without bringing the whole ceiling down.
