The shift in how new brake cables seat themselves surprised me

Back in 2018 I swear a fresh set of cables and housing would settle in after 50 miles and I'd be fine. Now it feels like the inner wires stretch or the housing compresses way more in the first 2 weeks. I did a full cable swap on my commuter last Tuesday, indexed it perfect, and by Sunday the rear shifting was off by a full click. Had to pull the barrel adjuster out almost 3 turns. Is this just cheaper cable quality these days or did something change with how housing is made? Anyone else seeing this faster settling period?
