My bike stand build from scrap metal changed how I see home repairs
I cobbled together a repair stand using old pipes and clamps last month. Now I won't touch a store-bought stand again because this one fits my space perfectly. It holds any bike rock solid and cost me almost nothing. Every mechanic should try building their own tools at least once. It makes you understand the mechanics way better than just buying gear.

See DIY stands fail and cause accidents during bike repairs.

But a lot of store-bought stands are wobbly junk too. The problem is usually rushing the build or using a bad plan, not the idea of making one yourself. I've used a homemade stand from wood and pipes for years that's way more solid than some flimsy tripod I could have bought. It just comes down to taking your time and not cutting corners.

What exact failures is Thomas talking about? Saying DIY stands fail is pretty broad. Are we talking about a design flaw in a common plan, or people using clearly wrong materials like drywall screws? Knowing the actual cause would help everyone avoid those mistakes.
