Just realized I've been using the wrong size cone wrench for years

Had a customer's vintage French hub in the stand and stripped the locknut trying to get it off with a 13mm, turns out it was a 14. Anyone else have a go-to trick for figuring out weird old sizes without a caliper?

Honestly, I read a tip once about using a set of feeler gauges. You can slide different blades in until you find one that fits the flats just right, then measure that blade. Tbh it's a bit slow but it saved me on some old Italian stuff when I was guessing between two close sizes.

Forgot my calipers once and just used a drill bit from my kit.
