Just left the bike valet at the Portland farmers market and I'm honestly baffled

Tbh, they had a whole crew of volunteers but not a single person had a chain checker or even a basic multi-tool on them. Ngl, I saw a kid's bike with a totally seized chain and they just parked it like that. How do you run a service like that without the most basic gear?

Yeah the "no basic gear" thing is wild. My buddy had a similar thing happen where his brake cable snapped at a valet and they just shrugged.

See, I get why they'd shrug. Valets aren't bike mechanics. Their job is to park it, not fix it. Your buddy should carry a multi-tool. A snapped cable is on the rider, not the parking guy.

Totally agree about the multi-tool. It's like driving a car without a spare tire and then being mad at the tow truck for taking too long. The valet's job ends at making sure the bike doesn't get stolen, not making it rideable. If your cable snaps five miles from home, that's your problem to solve, not the parking attendant's. Basic prep is just part of riding.
