Appreciation post: That old guy at the diner in Nashville who called me out
I was at this hole-in-the-wall diner near Music Row, scarfing down biscuits and gravy before a session. This older dude at the counter just looked over and said "Son, slow down, the music ain't going anywhere." He was a retired studio drummer from the 70s, and we ended up talking for an hour about how recording used to be live takes on tape. Anyone else ever had a random stranger drop some wisdom on you like that?

I remember reading something about how in the old days of recording, the musicians had to get it right in one take or it was a wrap. That retired drummer probably saw you rushing and knew you were missing the whole point of playing music. It's like how my grandpa used to tell me that the best songs come from slowing down and really feeling what you're playing, not just hitting the notes fast. Sounds like you got a free lesson from a real pro.

Buddy of mine got the same treatment at a bar in Austin from an old sound guy. Told him to stop worrying about the gear and start worrying about the feel, ended up changing his whole approach to mixing.
