Unpopular opinion: I stopped using a comb for blending on a tight fade and just use my clipper guard and my thumb now.
After a client in Austin said his cut felt 'rushed' because he saw me constantly switching tools, I tried doing the blend work with just my Wahl Magic Clip and my thumb to guide it, and the line disappeared smoother in half the time, so has anyone else ditched the comb for certain steps?

Yeah, the constant tool switching looks busy to a client. I use my thumb as a guide with a half guard open for that initial blend. Lets you feel the hair length and pressure better than a comb. Smoothes out the line before you even touch the trimmer. Saves a ton of time on a skin fade.

My buddy's shop had a client say the same thing, so he tried it and now his fades are way faster.

My old barber in Detroit swore by the comb method for every single fade. He said the thumb trick gets sloppy when you're tired or rushing. You lose that perfect straight line the comb gives you, especially on the back of the head. He could do a skin fade in 20 minutes flat and never used his thumb once.
