TIL my oven was off by 75 degrees for two years

I was wondering why my sugar cookies always came out flat no matter what I did. Finally bought a $8 oven thermometer from the grocery store and found out my oven runs way hotter than the dial says. Has anyone else had a big baking fail because of a simple oven calibration issue?

Did you check if your sugar was expired too?

Oh, the sugar thing is actually a really good point, @anderson.piper. I had a batch of sugar go weird on me once (it was about two years old and had gotten clumpy from moisture). It didn't change the taste of my cookies but it definitely messed up the texture, so I can see how expired ingredients could cause issues. Hope yours turned out okay in the end, that's such a frustrating feeling when you put all that work in.

75 degrees off is wild, @anderson.piper. At least your sugar cookies give you an excuse to call them "lava cookies" instead of admitting your oven is a liar.
