My grandma's church bake sale in Tulsa switched from scratch cakes to box mixes and I get it now
Went back to Tulsa for my grandma's church bake sale last month, first time in 8 years. Used to be 30 ladies showing up with cakes from scratch, now it's maybe 12 and half of them are Duncan Hines. I asked Mrs. Patterson about it and she said "honey, I'm 79 and my hands don't do frosting flowers anymore." That hit me harder than I expected. The part that got me was the box mix cakes actually sold just as fast, so nobody really cared except me. My grandma's coconut cake recipe is on a stained index card in her drawer and I don't know who's supposed to get it. Does anyone else have a family recipe that's quietly disappearing because the newer bakers just don't want to put in the work?
