My whole life I thought keeping a spare key under a fake rock was genius

I always bragged about my hiding spot under that ugly plastic rock near the porch. Then my neighbor Gary told me that thieves literally check fake rocks first because they're so obvious. Now I just give a spare to my friend Maria who lives 2 blocks away instead. Anybody else have a hiding spot they thought was clever but was actually dumb?

Watched a whole YouTube video about this once and it blew my mind how predictable people are with hiding spots. Fake rocks, under the doormat, above the door frame, inside a fake plant pot those are literally the first four spots burglars check according to some ex-con who did a Q&A. Makes you realize how much of our "clever" ideas are actually just the same thing everyone else is doing. Like how we all think we're original for using the same weak passwords or parking in the same shady spots at the mall. I switched to giving a spare to my neighbor too because honestly the only safe hiding spot is another person you trust.

Wow, that neighbor thing is solid but what happens when you need your keys at 2am and they're asleep? How do you handle that without looking like a burglar yourself?
