I told everyone in 2016 that tipping was dumb and servers should just get a real wage, then I worked 2 months at a diner in Toledo for $4.10 an hour | Bad Takes Anonymous - Thought Shares
I thought working fast food was bad but $4.10 an hour plus 14 hours on my feet plus people stiffing me on tips broke me in like two weeks. The thing nobody tells you is that the tip is not just extra money, it is literally how you eat that week. I did the math once and after taxes I was making like $60 a shift on a good day and $25 on a bad one. You learn real quick that a $2 tip on a $38 check means somebody at that table decided you do not deserve to pay rent. I still think the whole system is broken but telling servers to just get a "real wage" when the people paying them fight every minimum wage hike is a joke. The fix is not to tell workers to quit, it is to make the bosses pay up.
