Four hours fixing a zipper with a paperclip, turns out it was a 30 second job

Last Tuesday my duffel bag zipper jammed right before a flight out of Denver. I watched two YouTube videos, tried pliers, tried soap, tried wd-40, all that. Finally after 4 hours, a guy at the baggage counter just slid a paperclip into the little hole and pulled the slider back. I felt like an absolute fool. Why do I always jump to the complicated fix first? Has anyone else burned a whole evening on something that had a dumb simple answer?
