Watched Waterworld at my aunt's place in Reno and finally got why it flopped
She had it on VHS back in 1997 and I remember thinking the boat scenes were the coolest thing ever, but watching it again now I can see the story drags in the middle hour. The practical sets still hold up way better than most CGI water stuff today. Does anyone else think the bad reviews were more about the budget than the actual movie?
That middle hour thing is real, I rented it from a Blockbuster in Sacramento around 98 and fast forwarded through the atoll stuff to get back to the boats. The trimaran itself still looks amazing, they built that thing for real and you can tell, it cuts through actual water instead of some fake digital wave. Costner got roasted so hard because of the 175 million price tag, which was insane money back then, and I feel like critics went in ready to hate it for that alone. The movie has real problems, no question, but it got treated like a crime scene when it was just a messy, weird, kind of fun movie. Practical sets in water are brutal to shoot and they pulled off stuff that holds up 30 years later, so yeah, the budget talk buried the actual movie. Sorry you had to sit through that middle part again though, that's a long slog to get to the good stuff.
