My hard drive died mid-edit on a film I hated, and now I kinda miss it

I spent 6 weeks editing a terrible indie horror flick, the kind with a plot hole big enough to drive a truck through, and my external drive died without warning last Tuesday. I lost every version of the cut, but I also lost all the stress of trying to make something unwatchable look decent, which is weirdly freeing. Anyone else ever had a project fail so hard it actually felt like a relief?

Two years ago I deleted an entire photo album I spent a month editing for a friend’s wedding, and honestly, that delete button felt like a hug. It’s funny how we carry all this guilt about wasted time, but the second the thing is gone, we realize the time was never the problem. The problem was the constant nagging in our head that we had to fix it. Losing a project you hate is like losing a tooth that’s been wiggling for weeks, there’s a weird empty spot, but your tongue finally gets a break. I think most of us stay stuck on stuff way longer than we should, just because we’re scared to admit we’d rather start over. Your hard drive did you a favor, even if it didn’t feel like it at 2am.
