He pulled up the Martha scene on his laptop in a Denver classroom and said the problem was never the idea, it was that nobody let Snyder sit with the grief long enough, and I've been defending that movie ever since, so does anyone else have a moment where someone explained a hated film to you instead of just dunking on it?
The Martha moment hits different when you stop expecting it to be a punchline. Two guys with dead moms, one says the name and everything stops. That is not bad writing. That is grief doing what grief does. It jumps out at you when you least expect it and freezes you in place. The problem is the movie rushes past it before the feeling can land. A slower cut of just that scene would fix half the complaints people had. Your professor was right. Sometimes the idea is fine and the edit is the enemy.
