I defended Batman v Superman for 9 years, then found out the movie was cut by 30 minutes and everything clicked
So I have been the guy at work who argues Batman v Superman is good, and honestly I was running out of ammo. Last week I read that the movie was cut from a 4 hour assembly down to 2 hours and 31 minutes for theaters, which is a huge chunk gone. That explained why the whole third act felt like someone fast forwarded the plot. I rented the Ultimate Edition which adds 31 minutes back and the Africa scene and the whole Lex plot suddenly made sense. The Martha moment does not fully work still, but at least the story moves like a real story now. Did anyone else switch sides after seeing the longer cut, or am I just talking myself into it because I own the disc?
Watching the Ultimate Edition basically feels like watching a different movie, and the wild part is WB did the same thing to Justice League two years later so you can see a pattern with how they handle Snyder's stuff. Knowing they hacked 30 minutes out of a story that was already juggling like five plot lines makes the messy parts way easier to forgive, because that is not the director's fault, that is a studio wanting a shorter runtime for more showings per day. The whole Lex thing especially, in the theatrical cut he just seems like a weirdo for no reason but in the longer version you actually see him getting played and stringing everyone along the whole time. So nah you are not just talking yourself into it, you are just finally watching the movie the way it was meant to be seen, and owning the disc does not make your take wrong.
