Why does nobody talk about reading your draft out loud before posting it anywhere
I was sitting in the break room at my school in Modesto last Tuesday and this older teacher was reading her sub plans out loud to herself, real quiet, just mumbling under her breath. I asked if she was practicing for something and she said no, she just always reads her writing out loud because her eye skips over the bad parts but her ear never does. That hit me because I have about 30 pages of a messy short story on my laptop that I've been too scared to touch for 4 months. So I tried it that night, just read the whole thing to my kitchen wall, and wow. Every spot where a sentence fell flat, I heard it. I probably caught 15 clunky lines in an hour that I'd stared right past on the screen a dozen times. It feels dumb doing it alone, but it's way easier than trying to fix stuff by squinting at a screen. Does anyone else do the read it out loud thing, or is there a better trick for catching the stuff your eyes skip over?
