Warning: that free mulch from my city's giveaway killed my 3 year old shrubs
I picked up a load of free mulch from the city compost site off Route 9 back in April and spread it around my boxwoods and hydrangeas. Come June, four of the six were dead and a soil test showed the stuff was full of herbicide residue from treated grass clippings. Has anyone else gotten burned by free municipal compost, and is there any way to test it before dumping it in your beds?
