Neighbor's weed barrier debate made me rethink my whole approach

My neighbor Bob caught me laying down landscape fabric last Saturday. He told me he ripped all his out after 2 years. Said the weeds just grew on top anyway and it made his soil go bad underneath. Never thought about that. He's got this nice garden with no fabric at all. Just mulch and hand pulling. I was spending $50 a roll on that stuff. Has anyone else stopped using landscape fabric?

Landscape fabric is GREAT if you don't want to spend every weekend pulling weeds.

Cardboard and a thick layer of wood chips is the way to go. Just gotta make sure you wet it down good or it'll blow away before you get the mulch on top.

Heard you @charles_mitchell, but I actually had the opposite problem. My fabric got all clogged up with dirt and then nothing could drain through it. Water just sat there and rotted some of my plants. Now I just use cardboard under mulch and it works way better for the cost.
