My neighbor insisted I should plant a clover lawn instead of grass
He said it stays green with half the water, so I ripped out my whole patch last spring and now it's full of weeds and dead patches during summer heat, has anyone else tried this and actually had it work out?

Honestly, I read a study a while back that said clover lawns really only work if you're in a cooler, wetter climate and you're willing to treat them like a garden bed, not a lawn. @karen361 has a point, most people I've talked to who had success with it in warmer zones admit they have to reseed at least twice a year and water it every other day during dry spells. The dead patches you're seeing are a common issue with the white dutch clover during intense heat, it just doesn't have the deep root system to handle it without constant moisture.

Three years in with my clover mix and it barely survived last August here in zone 7. The company that sold me the seed said it handles foot traffic fine, but my dogs killed half the backyard within a month. If you don't have shade and regular watering, clover seems to just give the weeds a softer bed to grow in.

Did you reseed it after that first summer or just let it try to regrow on its own? I'm wondering if the company misled you about needing to overseed every season, cause my neighbor who pushed me into it now admits he adds more seed every spring and fall. What kind of clover did you use, the microclover or the regular white dutch stuff?
