Counted my tomato harvest last night and hit 214, way past the 90 I got in 2022
I keep a little notebook where I write down how many tomatoes I pick each day, mostly because my wife thinks I make stuff up when I brag about the garden. Last night I added up the season and got 214, which blew my mind since 2022 was only 90 and that was a pretty good year for me. What changed was the raised beds I built two springs ago from old deck boards, plus I finally stopped planting them in the same spot. I moved them to the south fence line where they get sun from about 7 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon, and the difference was night and day. I also started dropping crushed eggshells in each hole, which my neighbor Earl swears by and he has been gardening in this town longer than I have been alive. The cherry tomatoes did most of the heavy lifting, but the bigger ones finally stopped splitting on me too. Part of me wonders if it was just a lucky weather year and next season humbles me back to 100. Any of you track your harvest numbers, or am I the only one out here with a garden spreadsheet?
Eggshells are more of a calcium thing than a magic trick, and most soil already has plenty, so they probably weren't the reason your numbers jumped. The new spot with all that sun and moving them around is what really did it.
