Visited a local nursery and saw the same problem 5 times in one hour
I stopped by Green Thumb Nursery over on Route 9 yesterday to grab some soil amendments. While I was there, I watched five different people pick up bags of topsoil without checking the quality. One guy grabbed a bag that was clearly full of weed seeds and clay chunks... that stuff will wreck your garden beds in a season. Another lady bought cheap landscape fabric that looked thinner than a t-shirt. I swear, these big box nurseries just push whatever sells without caring if it works. Has anyone else noticed how much low-grade stuff is getting stocked lately, or did I just visit on a bad day?

Yeah, that bit about the lady buying the flimsy landscape fabric got me. I did the exact same thing last spring from one of those big chain nurseries. Rolled it out, laid it down, and by the end of July it was tearing apart with every weed I pulled. Total waste of money and a lot of time. And you're right about those bags of topsoil too. I bought one that looked fine on the outside, but once I opened it up it was half sand and full of those little white grubs. Had to dump the whole thing in the trash. It feels like these places just stock whatever is cheapest from the supplier and don't test any of it. I've started only buying from the local nursery that actually grows their own plants now. They cost a little more but at least you know the soil and stuff they sell isn't garbage.

Man I read an article from some gardening magazine that talked about how big box stores basically treat their garden stuff like a side hustle, not their main business. Said they buy the cheapest bulk materials they can find and just slap their brand on it. That totally lines up with what you two are saying. I've had that exact same thing with the grubs in a bag of "organic" compost from one of those places. Nasty little things wiggling around. Switched to a local nursery too and haven't had a single problem since. They even warned me about a bad batch of mulch they got and told me to wait a week for a new shipment. You just won't get that kind of honesty from the big places.

Total waste of money and a lot of time" - wonder if they're banking on people not bothering to return that junk.

Oh man, you had the exact same experience with the grubs? That is honestly so gross. I bought a bag of "premium garden soil" from a big box store last year and it was basically just wood chips and this weird gray clay. I didn't even find grubs, but I did find a bunch of those little shiny black beetles crawling around in there. I just threw the whole bag in the garbage too, felt bad about the waste but I wasn't risking it. It's crazy how they can sell stuff that's clearly full of pests and junk and nobody checks it. I bet the local nursery you go to would never sell something that nasty.
