Pulled up 22 feet of old chain link in my mom's yard and the dirt underneath told a whole story
My mom's backyard in Modesto had this rusty chain link fence along the side that had been there since before she bought the place in 2001, and I finally tore it out two weekends ago with a pry bar and an angle grinder. Under the fence line the soil was bone dry and pale about 6 inches down, but just 3 feet into the yard it was dark and full of worms, so that fence had been choking out everything along that strip for two decades. I dug in some compost and tossed down a cheap tall fescue mix, and after 3 weeks of watering it's already filled in green where there was nothing but hardpan. Now I'm eyeballing the other fence line wondering if I should just do the whole yard while I've got the tools rented, has anyone pulled a fence and been surprised how bad the ground was under it?
