My neighbor said raised beds are a waste of money, so I built mine from free pallets in Fresno
He told me over the fence last Saturday that you need at least $300 in cedar or don't bother, but my two pallet beds cost me $12 in screws and grew 40 pounds of tomatoes, so I'm curious if anyone else here has had luck with scrap wood over store bought kits.
Free wood and a neighbor who spends $300 to feel right about himself, sounds like you got the better end of both deals. I built three beds out of pallets I grabbed behind a feed store and spent maybe $30 total on screws and a cheap sander to knock down the rough spots. Two seasons in and the wood is gray and ugly but still holding, and the tomatoes don't seem to care what the box looks like. Tell him you'll take his $300 in compost instead.
