I was laying a small patio behind my shed in Columbus and told myself I'd stop at 100 pavers. Somehow I got on a roll with the gravel base and leveling sand, next thing I know I'm at 200 and the sun's going down. The crazy part is I only measured the area twice, once with a tape and once with my boot steps, and both said 180 needed. I ended up with leftover pavers stacked like a weird pyramid and no idea where I miscounted. Has anyone else had a project where the final count just didn't match your math, or is my measuring tape lying to me?
Math never lies but the ground does. Gravel base compacts down and your sand layer eats up way more room than you plan for, so the area grows while you're not looking. Every paver you tap into place also shifts the ones next to it a hair, and those hairs add up over 30 feet of row. My guess is your cuts at the edges went easier than expected so you filled in spots you figured you'd have to trim. Leftover pavers are a good problem though, way better than being 20 short and driving back to the yard at 7pm. Stack that pyramid somewhere dry and save them for the next crack that shows up in two winters.
