I finally mapped out the Kearsarge Pass loop myself instead of trusting the app
I was sitting at the trailhead near Onion Valley last month and a guy with a 20 year old paper map told me the route I had planned had a washed out section at 10,200 feet that no app was showing. I added two extra miles and about 900 feet of gain going around it, and when I got to that spot, the trail was just gone under a rock slide. The map cost me 12 bucks at a shop in Bishop and it saved the whole trip. Now I want to know, does anyone here carry paper backups on routes they have never walked before, or am I just old school?
Rolled my eyes at my dad's old maps for years and then got humbled on a trip where the app had me walking straight into a closed area. Now there's a folded map in my pack for anything new. Twelve bucks is cheap when the other option is a long walk back to the car.
