Rant: I thought those new fiber optic test kits were just overpriced junk

My boss made us get one for a job on a Gulfstream in Houston last month, and it actually saved us a full day of chasing a ghost signal. Who else has been forced to use a tool they hated that actually worked?

We had the same stubbornness with a new thermal camera for electrical panels. The thing found a hot connection behind a breaker we had already checked twice. Sometimes the fancy gear just sees what we can't.

Wasn't there a big thread on the avionics forum about those exact kits? I remember a guy saying he fought using one for weeks, but it pinpointed a bad splice in a bundle he would have had to completely re-run. Changed his whole view on the gear.

Yeah, that story got around. I read a follow up where he said the kit found a pinched wire under some insulation that wasn't even visible. Saved him from having to tear out a whole harness section. Makes you wonder how many "ghost" problems are just a single bad spot.
