The half-torqued lug nut I overheard at a diner in Gary

I was eating breakfast last Tuesday and heard two truckers talking about a wheel that came off on I-80, and one said 'torque specs are just a suggestion until they ain't.' That stuck with me because I see guys in the shop skip the torque wrench on quick rotations, and it takes 30 more seconds to do it right. Has anyone else noticed more corners being cut on the simple stuff lately, or is it just the 3 a.m. oil change crowd?

Torque specs are cheap insurance until you skip them once and eat a hub assembly cost. Always keep the wrench on the gun for the last pass, even if the line’s waiting.
