Unpopular opinion: I quit blocking panels to 100% flat and my comebacks stopped
A painter named Ray who has been in the trade since the 80s stopped by my shop in Bakersfield last Tuesday to pick up a fender and we got to talking about blocking. He said he never takes a panel past about 80% flat before sealer and honestly I thought he was just getting lazy with age. But I had a black Silverado come back twice with sand scratch swelling, and both times I had gone way too aggressive with 320 on a DA before I even hit primer. So I tried Ray's way on a dark blue Civic last week, stopped at 180 on the DA and finished by hand wet with 400, and the paint laid out dead smooth. I keep thinking about how much material I have been sanding off for no reason just because a flat panel looks done to the eye. Anybody else have an old timer hand them a tip that sounded wrong until you tried it?
