Unpopular opinion: most people answer 'how do I get into a trade' wrong and just name a school
Someone asked this in a local group last month, and 9 out of 10 replies were just 'go to the community college' or 'call the union hall.' That advice is not wrong, but it skips the part that matters, which is showing up somewhere in person and offering to carry stuff for free for two weeks. I got my start at 19 by walking into a shop on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie and asking the owner if I could sweep up after hours, and 11 days later he handed me a pair of strippers and put me on a job. A classroom can teach you code, but nobody hires you off a certificate alone, and most of the people asking never hear that part. If you got in without school, what did you actually do that first week?
My buddy did the exact same thing at a tire shop on Route 9W, walked in with no resume and just asked if they needed help cleaning up, and by Friday he was mounting tires. Nobody cares about your certificate if you never showed your face somewhere first.
