Warning: I just saw the state of the old Roman road near my town and it's getting wrecked
I was out near the old Roman road section outside of Chester last month, a spot I've visited for years. I went back yesterday and the change is shocking. The stone surface, which was pretty clear before, is now covered in deep bike tire ruts and new footpaths cut right across it. The timeframe is scary, it's all happened in the last six months. I think it's from all the new hiking and mountain bike traffic since they opened that new trailhead nearby. People are just walking and riding right over the stones, not staying on the marked path. You can see actual pieces of the ancient paving starting to come loose in one section. It's not a slow wear anymore, it's active damage. Has anyone else seen a local site get hit hard by a sudden surge in visitors like this?

Honestly, the local council could install a cheap wooden boardwalk to redirect foot traffic off the stones.

Yeah @ellis.faith, but then you'd just have to fix the boardwalk every few years when it rots.

Consider the cost of fixing the stones people keep walking on instead.
