My trowel handle splintered mid-excavation at a Roman site near York

I was scraping back a soil layer during a weekend dig when the wooden handle just gave out, flying into the trench. Turns out the previous owner had re-glued it twice without telling anyone. Has anyone else had gear fail at the worst possible moment on site, or am I just cursed?

Lost my trowel in a cesspit once. Took three days to find. Smelled worse.
