Dug 340 pieces of debitage in one afternoon at a survey site near Abilene and then got rained out
Two Tuesdays back our crew hit a lithic scatter in a cotton field outside Abilene that we almost wrote off as nothing. By lunch I had 340 pieces of debitage bagged, which is more than my whole previous month combined. Then a storm rolled in at 2pm and we spent 40 minutes covering units with tarps that mostly just blew away. Next morning the site was a mud pit, we screened maybe half of what we planned, and my boots are still drying out. Does anyone else keep a rain log on surveys to figure out which months keep wrecking your field days?
How many tarps did you lose to that wind? I've watched a whole stack of them sail across a pasture like kites while the rain just laughed at us. 340 pieces in one morning is a great day though, even if the storm stole the rest of it. My own rain log is mostly just me writing "rained out again" in the margins, but it did show me that April and May keep costing us weeks every single year. Nothing worse than muddy screens and boots that won't dry. Hang in there, that scatter will still be there when the field dries out.
