Why does nobody talk about how SRT ropes actually hold up after a year of sun
I always figured the cheap SRT line I grabbed from a buddy in Reno was gonna be junk after one summer of UV, so I kept it in the truck and used it only for small stuff. Last month I finally ran a full climb on it and the thing still felt solid, no glazing, no flat spots, and my friction hitch grabbed the same as day one. I even checked the sheath near the anchor and it looked better than a 2 year old line I paid triple for back in 2023. Now I'm wondering if I've been wasting cash on name brand ropes this whole time. Has anyone else run a cheap SRT line for a full season and actually had it last?
Kept a cheap hank of 8mm in the bed of my truck for two seasons just to see what would happen. The cover faded from blue to a washed out gray and got a little fuzzy, but when I stripped back the sheath the core was still clean with no chalky look or stiff spots. What kills rope faster than sun is grit working into the fibers and shock loads, so if you keep it off the ground and don't take big falls on it, the UV thing gets blown way out of proportion. The expensive stuff buys you better hand and a paper trail, not magic plastic.
