That time a dryer drum came apart mid repair

I had a call last spring in St. Louis where the customer said the dryer was making a grinding noise. Got there and the drum support roller had basically disintegrated and the drum was rubbing on the front panel. While I was pulling the old roller out, the whole drum dropped on my foot. Spent the next hour trying to balance it back up while fishing out plastic chunks from the belt track. Finished the job with a new roller kit and a bruised toe. Has anyone else had a repair just fall apart on them like that?

Bet you learned to stand to the side after that one.

Oh man, you have no idea. I once walked straight into a low hanging branch because I was too busy laughing at someone else's mishap. Bounced right off my forehead and I saw stars for a solid minute. That's when I realized karma has a real good sense of timing. Now I always check above me even when I'm just standing still. You'd think after that I'd be more careful but nope, last week I almost stepped in a puddle that was way deeper than it looked. Guess some lessons just don't stick.

Aw man, that's a classic lesson right there. I had almost the same thing happen with a washing machine drum a few years back. Learned the hard way to ALWAYS wedge a block of wood or a scrap 2x4 under the drum before you touch any of the support parts. Saves your toes and keeps you from trying to hold 30 pounds of metal with one hand while you work blind with the other. Now I do that on any top load washer or dryer that's even a little wobbly.
