Pro tip: I lost $150 on a universal dryer heating element that didn't fit my model

The box said it was compatible, but the mounting bracket was off by a quarter inch. Anyone know a reliable supplier for Maytag parts?

Man, that "compatible" box thing is the worst. My buddy had the same headache with his washer, a generic pump that was off just enough that the hose clamp wouldn't seat right. He ended up going straight to the manufacturer's website, even though it cost more, just to get the exact match.

Spencer's story about his buddy going straight to the manufacturer really hit home. I used to always hunt for the cheapest "universal" part online, thinking I was so smart. Then I wasted a whole Saturday trying to force a "compatible" dishwasher rack that was just a hair too wide. Now I just pay the extra for the real part from the maker's site. It fits right the first time and saves me so much anger.

Totally get that! I did the same thing with a fridge shelf and learned my lesson. @spencer_owens58 is right about those tiny differences causing big problems. Now I just buy the real part and save the headache.
