Guy told me at the supply house that 9 out of 10 'dead' fridges just need the coils cleaned
Was picking up a defrost timer in Tucson last Thursday and the counter guy dropped that stat while ringing me up. I laughed it off, then thought about how many $150 service calls I could have skipped over the years. Next day I pulled the back panel on a Kenmore in a rental and found a felt pad of dog hair packed around the condenser. Customer swore it was a compressor, but I vacuumed it out and the thing was at 38 degrees in an hour. How many of you charge full diagnostic on those, or just tell the homeowner to grab a coil brush?
Man that dog hair story hits home, pulled the same felt pad off a rental unit last summer and the tenant was ready to buy a new fridge. Feels bad charging a full diag when it's ten minutes and a shop vac, but you still drove out there and you still knew what to look for. Half the time I just clean it and tell them to keep an eye on it, then hand them a brush for next time.
