Vent: I owe my brother an apology about his engagement toast

My brother announced his engagement last Saturday at a dinner in Portland, and instead of being happy, I spent the whole night picking apart how he proposed. I told him the skywriting idea was cheesy and that he should've done something more private, all because I was jealous he beat me to it. He didn't say anything, just looked at his plate, and my girlfriend kicked me under the table twice. I realized the next morning that my own fear of never getting engaged made me crap on his best moment, and he doesn't even know I feel bad. Has anyone else lashed out at a family member because of your own insecurity, and how did you fix it without making it worse?

That bit about watching him look at his plate hit me hard. I did almost the same thing to my sister when she got engaged, I spent the whole dinner sulking and making snide comments about her ring being too flashy. The real issue was I'd been single for years and couldn't stand seeing someone else get what I wanted. I ended up writing her a short text the next day, just saying I was an asshole and I was happy for her, and she actually appreciated the honesty.
