Why does nobody talk about how loud the crickets are now

My grandpa used to say the land remembers what we do to it, and I brushed him off back in 2003 while we sat on his porch in Lubbock. Now I drive past that same old cotton field and it's been paved over for a strip mall, and the only sounds are AC units and truck brakes. He told me we'd miss the quiet first, and I swear the night noise here is just constant hums now, not like the layered chirping I remember. Anyone else notice their childhood spots feel almost sterile, or is that just me being nostalgic about nothing?
