The farmer's market vendor who called out my grocery waste
I used to buy those big multipacks of greens from the chain store, told myself I was being eco conscious. Some vendor at the Portland farmers market saw me tossing a slimy bag into the compost and said, you know that still took energy to grow, pack, and ship, even if it becomes dirt. That hit me. So I switched to buying loose produce in smaller amounts every 3 days instead of weekly hauls. My food waste is down to maybe one onion skin a week now. Has anyone else gotten a blunt comment like that that actually stuck?

I used to roll my eyes at people who said stuff like that, honestly. I figured if it goes in the compost, it's fine, no harm done. But that vendor had a point I never let myself sit with: the water, the fuel, the plastic, all of that already happened before the food even got to my kitchen. Wasting it after that does not undo any of it. Changing how often I shop took some getting used to, but now I actually eat what I buy instead of watching it rot in the drawer.
